Spiritual Geometry

By l990 I was consistently using the Golden Ratio (ø) in my paintings. In some of these works the purely geometric is harmonized with motifs such as plants, windows and buildings. The stem lengths, the leaf angles, all move--as a moth moves towards the light--in harmony with the Golden Ratio principle. When developed to a certain level of complexity, as in "Tree of Life", the geometric imagery emanates the growing, living quality of nature. All elements of the composition resonate with and "echo" the initial premise. The imagery can be "read" both visually and numerically.

The Mandala is also central to these works; based upon the circle, the center point is implied. As an image of an infinite whole, there is also an infinity of center points, all potentially expanding to form new circles. Instead of saying that the whole is equal to the sum of its parts, we can say the whole (circle) equals the part (circle), i.e. macrocosm=microcosm.

Out of the assortment of lines and angles and circles, an image sometimes "emerges".
